How We Check Holiday Schedules

How Open Day Guide verifies sources, assigns status labels, handles missing data and schedules calendar reviews.

Start with the organization

We use OPM for standard federal employee observance, the Federal Reserve for Reserve Banks, each exchange for its trading calendar, USPS for postal holidays, and UPS and FedEx for their own service schedules. SIFMA is the source for U.S. fixed-income recommendations.

An operating calendar is not a live availability feed. We do not claim to monitor weather, emergency closures, appointment capacity, market halts or a particular package.

Five labels, with distinct meanings

Open means a regular scheduled operating day for the stated service. Closed means a calendar closure for that scope. Modified hours means a verified early close or service restriction; the service detail explains which.

Varies by location means a national yes-or-no answer would be misleading. Not yet confirmed means we have not established the date-level operating schedule from the relevant source. Neither label should be read as a confirmed closure.

The year and the observed date matter

A Saturday federal holiday generally moves to Friday for standard federal employees, while Federal Reserve Banks remain open on that Friday. Exchanges and postal operations use their own calendars. Each service is resolved independently.

Market sessions are expressed in Eastern Time, including daylight saving time. The day picker uses the selected U.S. time zone for Today. The status is for that calendar date and does not say whether the service is open at this exact instant.

Review dates and missing evidence

Data records carry verifiedAt, reviewBy, effectiveFor, source scope and exceptions. Build checks validate those fields, warn when a review is due, and fail when a definitive status lacks a source. There is no unattended external-data publication.

The review checklist calls for a first source check 14 days before the observance, a second check two days before, and an extra check if the organization announces a change. A source review does not imply that an unverified year has become confirmed.

If the required date-level calendar is absent or cannot be verified, that service remains unconfirmed. These entries appear alongside verified schedules so you can see the limits of the available evidence.

Keep service alerts separate

Holiday schedules describe expected calendar operations. Emergency or weather notices should be shown separately with the issuing organization, affected area and effective time. This edition links to first-party checks and does not publish an automated live-alert feed.
